The Engineering Process

An engineering process is a set of steps engineers typically follow to solve problems. It is highly iterative and certain steps may be repeated several times in the course of a single project. The steps that are repeated can be described and framed differently.

Research is the first step. This includes locating data, identifying needs and understanding constraints. It is an essential part of the engineering design process since it helps engineers find the best solution to a given problem.

Once researchers have collected enough information, they can begin brainstorming solutions to the problem. This can be done in a variety of ways and is the area where engineering creativity really flourishes. This is the phase where the possibilities are evaluated and then analyzed. This could include simulation studies, generating decision matrixes, and even constructing prototypes to compare.

In this stage, students choose the most appealing idea and develop a plan to develop it. They then build the prototype using the specified materials and then test it against their performance requirements. Students may need to retest and revise their design to ensure it functions in the way they intended.

This is a great method to introduce the importance of problem solving and iteration. It is quite common for engineers to come up with an idea, test it and then come up with another issue that they need to tackle. The process continues until the engineer can come up with an answer that matches their expectations.
